- NFL teams may use franchise or transition tag on players starting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 18.
The NFL’s off-season is full of important dates – for the teams and for the fans (so they know what’s going on). Some cuts of veteran players already have been made to help teams get under the salary cap.
It all truly starts today and runs through the start of training camps in July. Here are the key ones through the spring meetings in May:
Feb. 18: Teams may use franchise or transition tag starting at 4 p.m.
Feb. 24-March 3: NFL Combine, Indianapolis
March 4: Deadline for teams to use franchise or transition tag is at 4 p.m.
March 10-12: Teams may contact and negotiate with agents of players who will become free agents as of 4 p.m. March 12. This contact period begins at noon March 10 and ends at 3:59 on March 12
March 12: Free agency begins at 4 p.m.
March 30 to April 2: Annual league meeting, often referred to as the NFL owners’ meetings, at The Breakers in Palm Beach
April 7: Teams with new head coaches can begin offseason programs
April 16: Deadline for clubs to time, test, visit, interview or examine draft-eligible players at the club facility
April 18: Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets
April 21: Clubs with returning head coaches can begin offseason programs
April 23: Deadline for club to exercise right of first refusal to restricted free agents who signed offer sheets. Also deadline for clubs to time, test, visit, interview or examine draft-eligible players anywhere
April 24-26: NFL Draft, Green Bay
May 1: Deadline for clubs to exercise fifth-year option for first-round picks from 2022 Draft
May 2-5 or May 9-12: Rookie minicamp
May 12: Rookie development programs begin
May 20-21: Spring meeting, coach accelerator, Minneapolis
