The film, costarring Bernadette Peters, became a hit with audiences (it was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year despite being released in December) and (largely) with critics, and remains a hilarious classic.

Tonight’s double feature on Turner Classic Movies features two action-packed 1960s favorites involving heroic (or antiheroic) groups including a certain number represented in their titles. Up first is The Magnificent Seven (1960). A remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, director John Sturges’ film is set in the Old West, where seven gunfighters — played by Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and James Coburn — are hired by Mexican peasants to liberate their village from bandits. Elmer Bernstein composed the film’s rousing, iconic and Oscar-nominated musical score. Second on the double bill is director Robert Aldrich’s The Dirty Dozen (1967). Set during World War II, it follows a rebellious U.S. Army major (played by Lee Marvin) who is assigned 12 convicted murderers — played by Bronson, Jim Brown, Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee John Cassavetes, Trini López, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker, Tom Busby, Ben Carruthers, Stuart Cooper, Colin Maitland and Al Mancini — to train as commandos and lead on a suicide mission to assassinate a large gathering of German officers.

Remembering Kris Kristofferson

Tonight, Turner Classic Movies celebrates Kris Kristofferson, who passed away Sept. 28 at the age of 88. Kristofferson was not only a brilliant singer-songwriter, a pioneer in the outlaw country genre, but also a talented actor with an impressive film resumé in a variety of genres, some of which found him in roles where he also got to display his musical talent. You’ll see five of Kristofferson’s films tonight, beginning with Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), director Martin Scorsese’s romantic comedy/drama led by Best Actress Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn. After that, Kristofferson has a chance to display both his acting and musical chops as he costars with Barbra Streisand in the 1976 remake of A Star Is Born. Next, Kristofferson plays Billy the Kid alongside James Coburn’s Sheriff Pat Garrett in director Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist Western Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), featuring a soundtrack by another music icon: Bob Dylan. The following film shows Kristofferson’s acting range, as he costars with George Segal and Susan Anspach in the romantic comedy/drama Blume in Love (1973). The lineup concludes with Kristofferson working in yet another film genre, alongside Jane Fonda in director Alan J. Pakula’s political thriller Rollover (1981).

The 2024 documentary Becoming Hitchcock — The Legacy of Blackmail, directed by Laurent Bouzereau and narrated by film critic/historian Elvis Mitchell, makes its TCM premiere tonight, kicking off an evening of films related to its theme, which reflects on the birth of the “Hitchcock Touch” and the development of the director’s signature style through the making of one of his benchmark movies, Blackmail (1929). That silent thriller follows the 72-minute documentary; after that is an encore presentation of Becoming Hitchcock, followed by the sound version of Blackmail that was also produced. The evening ends with two more of Hitch’s earlier British films: the thriller Murder! (1930) and the drama The Skin Game (1931). This examination of how Hitchcock developed what would become his familiar style by looking at his earlier films will continue next Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Raoul Walsh directed this 1941 film noir with a screenplay cowritten by John Huston, who would reteam with star Humphrey Bogart later that year on another noir classic, The Maltese Falcon. Here, Bogie plays a criminal, Roy Earle, who is hired by his old boss to help a group of less experienced crooks plan and carry out the robbery of a California resort. Costarring Ida Lupino, the film is also enhanced by location shooting in the titular Sierras and surrounding areas, including Death Valley and Mount Whitney, the setting for a famous car chase.
