Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season kicks off with an AFC East showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Jets.
Both teams enter the matchup at 1-1 — the Patriots beat the Cincinnati Bengals and lost to the Seattle Seahawks, while the Jets lost to the San Francisco 49ers and beat the Tennessee Titans.

The winner of this matchup will take sole possession of second place in the AFC East, only trailing the Buffalo Bills. Here’s how the Newsweek Sports staff expects Thursday night’s matchup to go.

Matt Levine: While New England’s defense has kept them alive to open the year, their offensive struggles are a little concerning. Going up against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, it could be tough for the Patriots to keep up. Rodgers has been looking more comfortable in the offense and it will lead New York to a big divisional win at home.
Prediction: Jets 23, Patriots 13
Ricardo Sandoval: This AFC East rivalry may not seem like too hot of a matchup on paper, but this one will be worth watching. Through two weeks of the season, the New England Patriots don’t look like the pushover many thought they would be sitting at 1-1. As for the Jets, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still getting his feet under him after missing virtually the entire 2023 season. The four-time MVP will be in for a tough battle against his new division rivals, but Rodgers and his team will do enough to come out on top in their first division game of the season.
Prediction: Jets 23, Patriots 20
James Brizuela: The battle between the Patriots and Jets could go either way and generally does when it comes down to divisional matchups. However, the Jets are at home, giving them a slight advantage. This will be a hard-fought defensive battle which will come down to who can score first. The Jets have better firepower and should be the team to strike first.
Prediction: Jets 21, Patriots 19
Noah Camras: The Jets offense has gotten off to a slow start through the first two weeks of Aaron Rodgers’ return. However, the team showed improvements in Week 2 and should take another step in the right direction in this short week. The Jets are big favorites in this one, and I expect them to take care of a Patriots team that has outperformed expectations early this season.
Prediction: Jets 27, Patriots 17.
