NFL training camp 2025 live updates: News, notes, injuries and more from around the league

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed suffered a “severe leg injury” during training camp practice Sunday, Colts coach Shane Steichen announced. Practice was briefly stopped while Ahmed was carted off the field.
The injury occurred when Ahmed broke a long run during an 11-on-11 period. He was tackled from behind by undrafted rookie safety Trey Washington, but when Washington grabbed Ahmed, who kept his legs churning, Washington used a hip-drop tackle to bring Ahmed down and landed on his lower right leg. Ahmed immediately grabbed his lower right leg and screamed in agony.
Steichen said the players in the developmental periods (essentially third-stringers and players lower than them on the depth chart) were instructed to tackle during 11-on-11. However, Steichen emphasized, Washington’s hip-drop tackle was obviously the wrong way to bring Ahmed down.
“We don’t encourage hip-drop tackles,” Steichen said. “We know Trey is down in the dumps, and I don’t think he was trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an edge … especially in the developmental (periods). Those guys are gonna have to tackle come preseason. So, our thoughts and prayers are with Salvon, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, both of whom have been team captains in each of the last two years, immediately came over to console Ahmed after he got injured. Ahmed’s lower right leg was placed in an air cast, and eventually the whole team surrounded Ahmed to show their support. Free safety Cam Bynum led the team in a prayer for Ahmed before he was placed on a stretcher and carted away. Ahmed placed a towel over his head as he left the field, and the crowd gave him a round of applause.
Practice was stopped for about 10 minutes while trainers tended to Ahmed. Steichen said he spoke to the team leaders, including linebacker Zaire Franklin, about whether or not to resume practice. Franklin is rehabbing from left ankle surgery and appeared in his first 7-on-7 period during training camp Sunday. He and his teammates chose to continue.
“I love Salvon,” Franklin said. “I’ve known Salvon for about nine years. I knew him back when he was at (the University of Washington), back when I was training in Seattle as a young pup. Extremely tough (situation). Praying for him, loving on him. Obviously, I’m gonna shoot him a text. I know he’s probably going through all kinds of mental stuff right now.”
Ahmed, who went undrafted in 2020, has played 38 games in his NFL career, all with the Miami Dolphins. His best season was with the Dolphins in 2020, when he totaled 75 carries for 319 yards and three TDs in just six games.
Washington, who played collegiately at Ole Miss, was distraught after injuring Ahmed. Franklin empathized with Washington and offered support for him, too.
“Young Trey, he’s competing for a job, straight up,” Franklin said. “So, he’s out here trying to compete and trying to be better. We’re warriors on that field. When we step on the field, we understand what the possibilities are. Obviously, we’re a team. We’re not trying to hurt each other, but at the same time we’re competing. These guys are trying to feed their families. It’s a part of the game, but definitely a tough break for Salvon and definitely praying for him.”
