Son of former NFL player from Atlanta dies unexpectedly
Chase Stegall, 20, was a student-athlete at DePaul University.
ATLANTA — Chase Stegall, an Atlanta native and the son of former professional football player Milton Stegall, died unexpectedly at age 20 this week.
He was remembered as a “bright light to all who knew him,” as one of his former schools posted on Facebook
A sophomore student-athlete at DePaul University in Chicago, Chase graduated high school from Woodward Academy in Atlanta in 2023 after attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Hapeville. He also played in the Southern Soccer Academy, a youth recreational and competitive league in Georgia.
A spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner in Chicago said the autopsy is complete, but more tests are needed to determine the cause and manner of death.
“Chase was a bright light to all who knew him, remembered for his big smile, big hugs and big heart,” said St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in a statement posted to Facebook.
This past year, Chase played in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games, according to his bio. The university and soccer team plans to support Chase’s family and teammates through this loss, DePaul Athletics said in its statement.
“We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Chase Stegall, a cherished member of our community, dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend,” DePaul Athletics wrote.
Milton Stegall, Chase’s father, played football for the Cincinnati Bengals and later the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League before moving to Atlanta.
Chase is survived by his father, Milton, his mother, Darlene, and his brother, Collin.
Details on a memorial service have not been announced yet.
