NFL Draft: Five Former Gwinnett Players Chosen

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Five former Gwinnett County football standouts made it to their sport’s ultimate level this weekend, becoming official selections in the NFL Draft.

The newly minted pro players came from four different schools in Gwinnett — a high-school football hotbed in the state of Georgia — and played their collegiate ball at five different institutions.

Alvin Kamara, a running back out of Tennessee, was the county’s top selection in the weekend’s draft, going in the third round, with the draft’s 67th overall pick, to the New Orleans Saints.

The former Norcross standout rushed 103 times for 596 yards and nine touchdowns for the Volunteers last season, adding another 40 catches for 392 yards and four touchdowns.

Running back Wayne Gallman, of Clemson, went to the New York Giants in the fourth round, with the 140th overall pick. Gallman played his high school ball at Grayson.

Gallman stacked up an impressive 1,133 yards on 232 carries last season, making it into the endzone a whopping 17 times during the Tigers’ National Championship run.

In Round 6, with the 192nd pick, the Carolina Panthers selected Alexander Armah, a multi-talented player from Division II West Georgia.

Armah, who went to school at Dacula, played tight end, defensive end and linebacker at West Georgia, but the Panthers drafted him as a prospect at fullback. At 6’2″, 253 pounds, Armah has the size and strength (26 reps in the 225-pound bench press at the NFL combine) to break through at the next level.

Also from Dacula, Corey Levin, an offensive guard who played at Chattanooga, was drafted by the nearby Tennessee Titans in the sixth round (Pick 217).

The 6’4″, 307-pounder was a three-time All American for the Moccasins.

Oklahoma State’s Chris Carson, a running back, was the final Gwinnett native to go in the draft.

The Parkview grad was drafted in the 7th Round (No. 249) by the Seattle Seahawks.

Carson missed about half of the 2016 season with an injury, but was known as a strong, punishing back who was hard to bring down. He averaged 92.8 rushing yards per game in his final four games of the season and added five rushing touchdowns during that span.
