Charlie Kirk slammed by former NFL player fired for political stance – Football – Sports

Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe had choice words for the late Charlie Kirk, which came after the NFL decided it was up to individual teams to honor the conservative pundit.

On Sept. 10, Kirk was at a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University when he was gunned down by a sniper. Since then, stars from different sports, such as Phil Mickelson and Christopher Bell, reached out to Kirk’s family on social media to post their condolences or offer prayers to the pundit after he was killed.

Despite different NFL teams honoring Kirk in their own way, Kluwe, the former punter for the Minnesota Vikings and the then-Oakland Raiders who claimed he was fired from his job as a high school football coach earlier this year after attending a MAGA protest and called it a “Nazi movement”, made sure to let his thoughts known. Taking to social media, the 43-year-old did not hold back.

“F—ing finally,” his post began. “Fight back against the bull—- framing that tries to make Dems responsible for everything. The GOP is choosing to create this kind of societal environment. They could stop it at any time. They have an agency as well. They’re not f—king children (except when, well, you know).”

The 43-year-old then added that what happened to Kirk is the quintessence of what the pundit had been promoting.

Kluwe continued: “It is possible to hold both of these things true at the same time: 1) political violence is never an appropriate choice in a civilized society 2) Charlie Kirk’s dream is to create exactly the kind of society he currently lives in, as spoken from his own mouth.”

Not only was the 43-year-old critical of Kirk, but he has also staunchly opposed Donald Trump‘s administration thus far.

“This administration is trying to put obedience over duty to the country,” he added. “This administration is trying to thrust our country into turmoil in order to reap power for themselves. And I think regardless of political affiliation, all of us as Americans should be able to agree — no kings, no tyrants, not now, not ever.”

Kluwe’s comments come after the NFL elected to let each team determine whether or not they wanted to hold a moment of silence for the 31-year-old. In a statement, the league stated what the protocol would be moving forward.

Don’t Miss

“Last night’s moment was the league’s decision. It’s up to the clubs for this Sunday’s games,” the league’s message Friday began.

“There have been moments following school shootings or an attack on a house of worship such as the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. There also have been moments following major international incidents such as Hamas‘ attack on Israel in October 2023 and weather-related incidents such as major hurricanes and fires.

“This is in addition to honoring those in the NFL family from tributes to recently passed players or personnel, or a player such as Damar Hamlin in 2023.

“The NFL also honored before Super Bowl LIV NBA star Kobe Bryant and the other victims of the helicopter crash (Gianna Bryant, Sarah and Payton Chester, Christina Mauser, Ara Zobayan) and also Pro Football Hall of Famer Chris Doleman who passed that week.”
