Manchester United and Newcastle United were in a race to sign RB Leipzig’s 22-year-old Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško, with both clubs reportedly making bids in the range of €70–75 million.

Incidentally, some Newcastle fans found out about Šeško’s possible move to Manchester United live on The Overlap: Fan Debate, when Jamie Carragher revealed the news, resulting in immediate frustration from the fans.
Midway through the show Carragher informed them that Manchester United had offered €75m with €10m add-ons for the 22-year-old Slovenian striker. As seen on the instagram clip, Carra then said that the striker “favors Old Trafford,” and the whole fan public went into meltdown.

The reaction on the show was quick and emotional. One Newcastle fan summed it up with “here we go again”, the feeling of déjà vu that has haunted fans for years who feel the club never closes the big deals.

That didn’t go unchallenged. A third fan quickly replied with a line that broke the tension and won the crowd over: “Alan Shearer did, mate”. That comment got a laugh from everyone, including Carragher.

It also reminded everyone of a precious moment for the Magpies, when Alan Shearer turned down Manchester United twice in his career and chose to join his boyhood club Newcastle in 1996 despite Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest.
