High school football previews: Goddard Lions

GODDARD, Kan. (KSNW) — Goddard head football coach Tommy Beason’s Lions have come a long way since their 0-9 season in 2022.
Last year marked a few milestones, including handing eventual 4A state champion Andover Central its only loss of the season. Beason’s group finished 6-3 last year, good for third place in the AVCTL, but a first-round playoff exit to Valley Center means this group is hungry for change.

“We’re ready to eat,” senior defensive end Trey Wright said. “We’ve been out here all summer putting in work. I like to see the team-building and chemistry we have going into this year.”
“We got hurt in the first round of the playoffs. This season, we’re looking to push it further,” senior safety Kamren Loch said. “I believe a lot in our team; we’ve definitely stepped up a lot this year with a big class of seniors on varsity.”

“I’m really confident in everyone,” senior wide receiver Briar Rojas added. “I know that we’re going to come back hungry because our offense is looking really solid so far.”

Quarterback Brock Sullivan and running back Erik Olivas make their much-anticipated returns on a veteran-led team. Rojas is expected to step in at quarterback until Sullivan makes his return from injury.
Fans can expect a little more of a passing attack from this group as the team has adjusted its receiving corps, but its identity still lies on the defensive side.
“Defense is our pride and joy. It’s what we spend the most time on,” said head coach Tommy Beason. “We try to prep every week like it’s the Super Bowl … we really feel like it’s a place where, even if we’re a little smaller, we can still even the playing field by playing better defense than other teams.”
Goddard’s season will start with a rematch against rival Maize. The Eagles were another team the Lions upset last year, but this season’s game will be in enemy territory. Kickoff is set for Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
