From afar, being an NFL player seems like a pretty sweet gig. While there’s a risk of injury, you get paid millions of dollars to play a children’s game. There’s also a large chunk of the year without any structured work, the chance to become rather famous and all sorts of fringe benefits, like a head start on a post-playing career.
But there’s more to the NFL than meets the eye. And, for all of the fame and fortune, things can sometimes get a bit messy behind the scenes. Allow Jason Kelce to explain.
The Kelce Brothers Aren’t Thrilled With NFL Bathrooms
If you’ve ever seen the inside of a professional sports (or even big-time NCAA program) locker room, you know that things can be rather luxurious. When you’re the road team, though, things are a bit less comfortable. And while we’re long removed from Red Auerbach turning off the hot water in the visitor’s locker room, NFL bathrooms can still leave something to be desired.
“There’s two things that I hate, small locker rooms and a small amount of stalls,” Jason Kelce explained on the New Heights podcast. “Cause it is not ideal. Pre-game, and you’re trying to time up your pre-game ritual, and there’s only two frickin’ stalls in the bathroom for an away team. I get p***** off at that.”
At that point, his brother Travis weighed in.
“You’re sitting on a warm seat, and it ain’t got heated seating,” he added. “It’s from a 300-pounder.”
And while that’s probably enough context to explain the issues that NFL players face, Jason wasn’t done there.
“There’s a three-man line to get into that thing,” the center continued. “So, you know all of the other three guys that were just on that seat. Not ideal.”
With that being said, though, this isn’t the NFL veteran’s first rodeo. He’s honed a technique over the years to get himself ready to take the field.
“The first thing I do when I get to an away team’s stadium is I go in and see how many stalls there are,” Jason explained. “If it’s a small amount of stalls, I’m gonna go in there and try to force a [expletive] out. And I’m gonna take some Imodium, so I don’t have to deal with this nonsense.”
When Travis asked if it was really that big of a problem, his brother noted that he simply didn’t want to deal with the inconvenience.
And, for those who are curious, the tight end doesn’t share the same pre-game concerns. While he’s more than capable of using an airplane bathroom, he “couldn’t tell you the last time [he] took a [expletive] at a stadium.”
Despite those differences, though, both brothers have found plenty of success. Jason has risen from being a sixth-round pick to being one of the top centers in modern football. He also has a Super Bowl ring to his name and, based on how the 2023 campaign is going, could add more silverware to his trophy case this season.
Not to be outdone, Travis has two Super Bowl titles and stands tall as one of the game’s elite tight ends; even in his (eventual) retirement, he’ll be remembered for his role in evolving the position.
Between the two brothers, they’ve earned nearly $160 million in on-field salary alone; endorsements and other endeavors will only add to that pot. No amount of money, though, can remedy the complexities of an away-team locker room.
Maybe being an NFL player isn’t as glamorous as it seems.
