Lights, Camera, Touchdown: PVIFF’s 20-Year Legacy

Where Atlanta’s storytellers take the field and shine under the lights

By HuddleUp Magazine Staff

ATLANTA — Every dynasty in sports has its defining season. For twenty years, the Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF) has been running bold plays, spotlighting new talent, and building community like a championship team. Now, as it marks its 20th Anniversary October 16–19, 2025, at Atlanta’s Hyatt Villa Christina, the festival is stepping into its own Super Bowl moment — a celebration of cinema, culture, and the city that has become a hub for storytellers.

From Rookie Year to Dynasty Status

When founders Len Gibson and James “JB” Brown launched PVIFF in 2005, they weren’t backed by Hollywood giants. They were underdogs, hustling with heart and vision, determined to create a platform where diverse voices could be heard.

Two decades later, that scrappy team has turned into a dynasty. PVIFF is now recognized across the globe as a launchpad for talent, giving filmmakers and actors their first shot under the lights and cementing Atlanta’s place as a creative powerhouse.

“PVIFF has been a cultural hub for diverse voices in film and television,” said Gibson. “This milestone represents not just growth but the impact of Atlanta’s creative community on the world stage.”

Brown added, “From the start, our mission has been about education, empowerment, and inspiration. Hitting our 20th season proves what teamwork, consistency, and faith can build.”

The Kickoff: Opening Night at Batsi

The celebration kicks off Thursday, October 16 with Opening Night at Batsi. This isn’t just a red-carpet affair — it’s the opening drive. The PVIFF Monologue Competition Finals will bring raw talent to the stage, hosted by comedian/actor Mike Bend and highlighted by actress Jennifer Sears (Tyler Perry’s Divorced Sistas). Add in music, food, drinks, and the type of networking energy that feels like a locker-room huddle before the big game.

Film Study: Panels & Playbooks

PVIFF has always been about preparation and strategy — the film study before the championship. This year’s panels include:

  • Cast Me If You Can – A scouting combine for actors, moderated by the Cinema Dolls with Myles Truitt (BMF) and others.
  • Money Markets & The Greenlight – Breaking down the X’s and O’s of financing and distribution.
  • Bill Duke Actor’s Bootcamp – A training camp led by industry legends Terri J. Vaughn and Bill Duke himself.

Other industry leaders taking the field include Dr. Ty Johnston-Chavis, Jeff Robinson (CEO, MBK Entertainment), and Yung Joc.

Highlight Reels: Screenings & Premieres

Just as football delivers unforgettable highlight reels, PVIFF brings stories that stick with you:

  • Baltimore Hustle – Directed by Pen Ken.
  • Deceitful Lies – Rodney Perry’s directorial debut.
  • Something About Tomorrow – With Lamman Rucker.
  • Georgia Peach – Starring Jasmine Burke and Cocoa Brown.
  • What Happened to Love – A pilot from Embree Perry.

Each screening is a chance to witness the kind of breakthrough that turns a rookie into an all-star.

The Championship Ceremony

On Sunday, October 19, it all comes down to the PVIFF Awards Ceremony, hosted by Lydia Caesar. Honors will be handed out for Best Short Film, Best Feature, Best Documentary, Audience Choice, and more — the MVP trophies of the festival.

Special recognitions go to industry vets like Kevin Hooks, Keith Robinson, and Rodney Perry, while the finale crowns icons Bill Duke, Len Gibson, and James “JB” Brown with Honorary Ph.D.’s from Trinity International University of Ambassadors, presented by Dr. Jacqueline Mohair.

The Legacy Play

Backed by powerhouse sponsors including the GA Film Commission, Upscale Magazine, and Trinity International University of Ambassadors, the 20th Anniversary isn’t just another milestone — it’s proof of a legacy built on resilience, vision, and teamwork.

For Atlanta, PVIFF at 20 is more than a festival. It’s a championship moment that proves this city knows how to win — on the field, on the screen, and in the hearts of the community.
