WATCH: Georgia’s Smael Mondon discusses the rivalry with Georgia Tech

Georgia’s Smael Mondon spoke with the media, he discusses the rivalry with Georgia Tech and playing against EJ Lightsey.

Georgia football turned what looked like a Friday night massacre by Georgia Tech into a miraculous Bulldog comeback win, 44-42, in eight overtimes.

The Bulldogs pulled out the victory after overcoming 20-6 and 27-13 fourth-quarter deficits, pulling it out when freshman Nate Frazier ran up the middle for the mandated two-point conversion.

It came after a seventh overtime when Carson Beck was stopped on a designed run up the middle and Smael Mondon was flagged for pass interference on a pass, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball at the 1 ½ yard line, but CJ Allen stopped Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King’s run.

Allen then applied pressure on King, forcing an incomplete pass when the Yellow Jackets went first in the eighth overtime.

The Bulldogs orchestrated the late-game comeback as Beck hit Dominic Lovett on a 17-yard touchdown with 3:39 to go in regulation and then again on a 3-yard scoring strike with 1:01 to go.

Georgia safety Dan Jackson set up the final score when he jarred the ball loose from King with two minutes to go, giving the Bulldogs the ball at the Yellow Jacket 32 after it was recovered by Chaz Chambliss.

Georgia moved to 10-2 while the Yellow Jackets fell to 7-5 just three weeks after upsetting a No. 4 Miami.

The Bulldogs now advance to the SEC championship next week and still have a chance to get into the 12-team College Football Playoff if it loses as a three-loss team.

Pregame

For the first time in 30 years, there’s Georgia football in Sanford Stadium tonight — on a day other than Saturday.

The Bulldogs play in-state rival Georgia Tech in the first Friday game between the teams since 1994.

“It’s the last home night game and last home game of the season,” center Jared Wilson said. “Hopefully it’s loud and fun just like Saturdays.”

Of course, there’s still a chance 9-2 Georgia will end up hosting a playoff game, but this game is the focus now for the Bulldogs.

“It’s an in-state championship to me,” said Georgia inside linebacker CJ Allen, who hails from Lamar County High in Barnesville. “I never won a championship in high school. I’ve never been to a state championship, so it’s like a state championship to me being a kid from Georgia.”

The Bulldogs, No. 8 in the coaches poll and No. 7 in the CFP rankings, treated Thanksgiving Day like they usually do a Friday before a game, which meant having a Thanksgiving meal together. They did their normal Wednesday practice on Tuesday.

“This is a strap it on, strike somebody in the mouth, keys, fits kind of game,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “They know it is, we know it is. No way around it.”

Nobody scored. Another OT.

Both teams connected on two-point conversion passes in overtime No. 5. We march on for more football.

Nobody could score in the fourth overtime. Georgia had a penalty also but it was declined.

Two passes on the required two-point conversions, two incompletions. Going to a fourth overtime.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the second overtime but both of their two-point conversion passes failed. Game is tied at 40.

Georgia Tech QB Haynes King hits Eric Singleton for a 12-yard touchdown to force another OT at 34.

Carson Beck hits Vanderbilt transfer London Humphreys on the left side for a 14-yard touchdown. Georgia Tech gets its chance.

Georgia and Georgia Tech are going to overtime for the first time since 2014 against each other when the Yellow Jackets won 30-24.

Georgia has tied it up. Carson Beck hits Dominic Lovett for a 3-yard touchdown with 61 seconds to go. Game tied at 27.

Georgia needed less than 2 minutes to drive the field and get a Carson Beck 17-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Lovett to make it 27-20 Tech.

Quarterback Haynes King 11-yard touchdown run with 5:37 to go puts Georgia Tech ahead 27-13. The Bulldogs may be running out of time.

Georgia has pulled within 20-13 on a Nate Frazier 1-yard touchdown run with 8:18 to go. The drive took nearly six minutes.

Yellow Jacket kicker Aidan Birr converted a 23-yard field goal to extend the Georgia Tech lead to 20-6 with 14:17 to go in the game.

Georgia went with a heavy set but Carson Beck threw to the right side to tight Oscar Delp for a 2-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs went for 2 and the pass was stopped. Georgia Tech leads 17-6 with 9:53 to go in the third quarter.

The halftime crowd here is quiet as you can imagine after watching Georgia Tech go the locker room with a 17-0 lead. Peyton Woodring’s 53-yard field goal try as time expired was into the wind and short. Haynes King’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Haynes put the Yellow Jackets up 17-0.

Haynes King’s 2-yard touchdown run off a fake handoff puts Georgia Tech up 10-0 with 4:40 to go in the first half. The Yellow Jackets should be up more it feels like.

Georgia Tech outgained Georgia 131-67 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs were in the red zone but Nate Frazier was stopped for no gain on third and fourth down at the 14 needing one yards. Jamal Haynes has 67 yards on 4 carries. It’s 3-0 Tech heading into the second quarter.

Georgia Tech has gone ahead on a 31-yard Aidan Birr field goal. Running back Jamal Haynes went 44 yards on the opening play of the game on the outside after Georgia appeared to have him bottled up inside, but the Bulldogs defense stiffened.

Haynes King was taking snaps pregame from starting center Weston Franklin with freshman Aaron Philo taking No. 2 snaps. Kelly Quinlan of Rivals.com, according to a post on the UGASports message board, had multiple people tell him Philo, from Prince Avenue Christian, will redshirt and not play tonight “barring a dire emergency.”

We’ll see.

As the running back room turns continues for Georgia. The latest injury is freshman Chauncey Bowens who isn’t dressed out and has a boot on his left foot. Of course, leading rusher Trevor Etienne is out again with his ribs injury.

Bowens has 58 rushing yards on 16 carries. He had 31 yards on five carries against UMass.

Running backs Roderick Robinson, who has been sidelined all season by a toe injury, and Branson Robinson, who has missed time with a knee injury, are warming up for the second week in a row. They did not play last week.

After missing the UMass game last week with a hamstring injury, Anthony Evans is practicing punt returns on the field now, but he’s behind Malaki Starks. We’ll see who Georgia uses in that spot tonight.

Georgia wide receiver Dillon Bell is going through pregame warmups after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury. He caught passes in the end zone with other receivers and just went on a route at less than full speed, making a one-handed catch. Stay tuned. UPDATE: He just ran a route at full-speed. Looks fine.

The Thanksgiving weekend and the rare Friday night date could dampen the home crowd vibe tonight. Students are relatively slow to fill up their sections so far. The tailgate scene and traffic seemed to be more subdued than usual. The cold weather doesn’t help.

The referee tonight is Jeff Heaser. He worked the Georgia game at Ole Miss three weeks ago. That didn’t go well for Georgia, but the Rebels had a lot to do with that.

The Georgia game captains tonight are quarterback Carson Beck, inside linebacker Smael Mondon, offensive guard Tate Ratledge and outside linebacker Chaz Chambliss.

Good thing the new press box here at Sanford Stadium is enclosed. It feels like Big Ten weather a few hours before kickoff with the wind blowing hard and temperatures dipping into the 40s.
