SUMTER, S.C. — A major event in Sumter is drawing attention not just for its celebrity participants, but for the meaningful causes it hopes to support.

The C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S. of Golf Tournament is bringing together athletes, entertainers and the community for a charity golf event at Beech Creek Golf Course to raise awareness and funds for several organizations across South Carolina.

“The focus isn’t just on the golf course but also to raise funds and awareness for several charitable efforts,” said Dexter Davis, co-founder of Champion Ministry.

Davis said the event supports a range of causes across the state.

“Well, that is but one of our goals this year,” Davis said. “We are actually raising awareness and support for the Fatherhood Coalition, Winners Travel, that’s another organization, Hidden Wounds, that’s another one, and the Alzheimer’s community.”

One of the key beneficiaries is the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, a nonprofit that provides education and resources to fathers throughout the region.

“So, what I would like for them to take away and hear the message of is that there are others who went through what you went through or what you’re going through,” said Derek Baccus, a volunteer with the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and there are resources here for you. You don’t have to do it alone.”

Former NFL player and South Carolina native Archie Reese spoke about how important positive male mentorship can be.

“As a male and as a man, you need a male as a boy with somebody in your life to encourage you, lead you, and guide you to the best of their ability,” Reese said.

Organizers said men interested in learning more about any of the programs will have the opportunity to get information and sign up on-site.

“The department will be here, some colleagues and supports will be here, so any questions they will be able to answer,” Davis said.

Coker Lowder, general manager at Beech Creek Golf Course, said the combination of golf and community outreach makes the event special.

“Golf teaches you about life every day, so with that and with these organizations also working [with] these kids, I mean, you can’t beat it, there is nothing better for them,” Lowder said.

The event officially begins on Monday at 9 a.m. at Beech Creek Golf Course in Sumter. Organizers said it is open to the public and encouraged attendees to come not just for the entertainment, but to support causes making a difference across South Carolina.
